Jim Schwobel Passes

Sunday December 5, 2021

I am sorry to report that our friend Jim Schwobel passed away this morning.

Menzina Churchman went to visit him Saturday and he was very subdued, and when she went to see him around noon today he had passed away.

I just got a note from his cousin Michelle Connor who was with him last night. She says he did not suffer and passed away peacefully.

There will be more news about a celebration for Jim at the hangar with his pétanque buddies and his band friends.

Please do not mention this on FaceBook because not all the family has been notified yet.

So sorry to lose one of our best friends.

- Jeff

Trophy Presentation

LBC's trophy is updated with the winners of our Oct 31st Terry Plemons Memorial Tournament.

Instead of individual trophies LBC has one trophy with winners' names are added to it.

The trophy resides with the winner until our next tournament.

The LBC also has the Terry Plemons Memorial Plaque which displays the names of the winners of the TPM tournament.

Thierry Amisse is the designer and Fine French Woodworking produced our Trophy & Plaque.

Thierry always thinks big.

We originally hoped the plaque would be hung in the gift shop of the French Legation.  To date that has not transpired and it hangs in Michael Plemons home.

Umpire Training – Updated

Gary and Shirley Jones

ARE YOU INTERESTED? UPDATE

Here is the big idea. You may not be interested becoming an official FPUSA umpire, but you still might like to learn the rules of pétanque.

You may not want to take the written umpire test, but you might like to have a session or two with National umpire Gary Jones, the existing local umpires, and new umpire trainees to focus on really learning the rules and, at least, get a better understanding of how the whole umpire thing works.

If this sounds like something you might be interested in let us know and we will try to set up a session or two, maybe connected to regular Sunday play at the hangar, where we can get together and learn the latest rule changes as a group along with those who want to get qualified.

ACTION REQUIRED

Click the "I AM INTERESTED" button below and send your message. Then you can be part of the discussion on what we might possibly arrange. Thanks.

We need to decide soon, because Gary Jones will not be here very long.

- ORIGINAL MESSAGE -

Gary and Shirley Jones, from North Carolina, will be in the Austin area until around the end of the year.

Gary is a National Umpire in the FPUSA and has generously offered to, once again, train and test people who would like to become pétanque umpires in the FPUSA.

The links below have  information regarding the process of becoming a new Club Umpire or seeking promotion to a Regional Umpire.

Anyone interested should check the requirements and begin the process by submitting the application form.

Once that is done, approved applicants should begin the study of rules and measuring guidelines.

Gary Jones is willing to meet with individuals or groups of people for as long as it may take to discuss and address any questions you may have.

It would be best if such discussion/training sessions could be done as a group.

The tests will need to be administered before December 15, 2021.

Gary says the test itself should only require 30-40 minutes and shouldn't prove too tough for anyone who has given the rules some prior attention.

If you are interested in becoming a pétanque umpire or getting a promotion click the button below and leave a message ASAP. We will get back to you.

LInks to Information

General information on FPUSA umpire regulations.

The application for you would need to send in.

Once you complete Part One of the form it should be submitted to:  NSD@usapetanque.org

Once the candidate's application has been accepted, s/he has 90 days to make arrangements with a regional or national umpire for written and practical testing. A club president or Sport Committee Member will be required to witness the testing.

Tips concerning the different ways to measure between boules.

Last but not least, here are the Official Rules of the Sport of Pétanque.

A special bonus link to general pétanque etiquette that all players should be familiar with.

Jim Donates His Wine Collection

Recently, Jim Schwobel decided to donate his collection of wine and spirits to his friends.

We, at the Legation Boules Club, are doing our best to make sure everyone gets to have some of it!

Every weekend we plan to sample another bottle.

Here we are, at the Terry Plemons Memorial Tournament on Halloween day having a taste of one of the bottles of red wine.

Thanks again to Jim and special thanks to Alex Gouyet for making this cool drone video!

Museum Day at the French Legation

Scenes from Sunday at the Legation

Marion Bermondy is headed off for a month in France soon.

She wanted to show her family where we play pétanque so she made this little video of the Legation Boules Club in action on Museum Day at the French Legation.

Now Marion's family will know the kind of people she associates with.

Chris Smith – Heart Surgery

One of our players, Chris Smith, will be undergoing heart surgery August 31st.

Chris, the BIG guy who always wears black (now blue, but whatever) is going in for an ablation surgery. It is supposed to be routine and easy, but he is still stressed out about it.

All his needs are currently being taken care of by family.

Just knowing you are thinking about him is more than enough.
