Save the date: Tuesday, Oct 13 - The Hangar needs us!
Decisions about the Browning Hangar's future are being made right now. The agreement that governs Mueller ends next year. The developer has already presented remodeling plans to the City's historic review committee. And the City is preparing new rules for Mueller properties.
What's missing is a clear promise that the Hangar stays what it is today: a free, open public space where anyone can play, gather, exercise, or just sit in the shade without buying anything.
I've prepared a proposal asking the City's Mueller advisory commission (PIAC) to define what "public access" should really mean. All ten commissioners now have it. The next PIAC meeting is:
Tuesday, October 13, 6:00 p.m. Austin Energy Headquarters
4815 Mueller Blvd, Rm 1111
Commissioners notice who shows up. A full room tells them the Hangar matters to real people. Here's how you can help:
1. COME. That's the most important thing. You don't have to speak. Plan on about an hour.
2. RSVP to me HERE so I know our numbers.
3. VOLUNTEER TO SPEAK (optional). I'm looking for 4 or 5 people to give short talks of under 3 minutes. I'll help you prepare. I especially want to hear from: - people who use the Hangar for things other than pétanque (exercise, family time, dog walking, music, martial arts); - Mueller residents, especially in Council District 9.
4. BRING SOMEONE who uses the Hangar, even if they've never heard of PIAC.
Can't make it? If you live in District 9, a short note in your own words to Council Member Zo Qadri's office makes a real difference. Click HERE to send Zo an email.
A note on tone: we're there to support the Hangar, not to oppose anyone. The developer's representatives will be in the room, and our friendly, organized presence is what has earned us respect over the years.
I'll confirm details a few days before the meeting, once the agenda is posted.
Thank you. This is how we keep the Hangar open for everyone.
