Dear reader,

Jim Schwobel - Update

lhab_jim_schwobel
We just got off the phone with Jim Schwobel and he gave us an update on his situation.

As most of you already know our good friend Jim has been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. He just received the results of some recent biopsies and, unfortunately, they confirm that he is facing a worst case scenario.

It is possible, but unlikely, that he will pursue any form of chemotherapy treatment.

For the next couple of days he expects to remain at Ascension Seton hospital and will be doing physical therapy for his broken arm. The good news is that his arm will not require surgery.

In a few days Jim expects to be moving to an assisted living facility, although at this point, it has not been determined which one he will be moving to.

After some time in assisted living, he expects to move to a hospice.

Jim says it's interesting that he has two major groups of friends, the pétanque crowd, and his buddies in the polka band where he plays the tuba.

He suggested he likes the idea of a lively, more "fun" wake type of ceremony, instead of a classic "memorial" - most likely at the Browning hangar. He likes the idea that his polka band buddies can meet and celebrate with his pétanque playing friends.

[Jim expressed some concern that his polka band friends were in the habit of drinking beer at celebrations and that alcohol was not allowed at the hangar. I told him not to worry about that!]

Jim says that he was able to retire at age 55, and now, at 75 he feels grateful that he has been able to do just about whatever he has wanted to do for the last 20 years.

As ever, Jim is very pragmatic and has already made plans to donate his pétanque boules and books on pétanque so that they can be used by new players.

I know all of you are eager to do what you can to help, or maybe visit with Jim, but he says that as long as he is in the hospital visiting is not a good idea.

Jim suggested that once he gets settled at the assisted care facility it might be a good idea to do a Zoom meeting where he can visit with whomever wants to join in.

I will work with Jim to send out an update in a few days.

- Jeff
