Origins of Pétanque from 2300 Years Ago
New discoveries in archaeology prove that people were playing boules at least 2300 years ago.
Recent excavations have found a collections of statues near an ancient spa in Italy, and one of the bronzes clearly demonstrates that playing boules was already a popular sport.
The bronze of this little guy, who appears to have just won a tournament, proves that ancient players started at very young age. It also shows us that the game used to be a clothing-optional sport.
Fortunately, things have changed for the better since then.
